Claim Rejection

Claim rejected? How to escalate without panic

Policy Setu Editorial · 24 Sep 2026
Rejected claim letter with escalation path

A rejection letter is a starting point, not the end. Use the reason codes and policy wording to decide the next move.

Rejection letters often look final. In practice, the reason line tells you whether the issue is documentation, exclusion, waiting period, or non-disclosure.

Read the reason, not only the outcome

Highlight every clause number mentioned by the insurer. Match it with your policy schedule and wording before you draft a reply.

Rebuild the evidence pack

If the rejection cites missing papers, collect hospital records, prescriptions, and payment proofs. Label files by date so the reviewer can follow the treatment journey.

Use the grievance channel

Send a concise grievance with claim number, rejection date, your point-wise reply, and annexures. Ask for a reasoned written response.

Escalate when the reply is unfair or delayed

If the company response is incomplete or the delay continues, external forums such as the Insurance Ombudsman may be appropriate. Keep expectations realistic and document-driven.

Frequently asked questions

Can a rejected claim be reopened?
Sometimes yes, especially when missing documents or factual errors caused the rejection. The insurer must still apply policy terms.
Is every rejection worth escalating?
Not always. Compare the rejection reason with your policy exclusions and waiting periods before spending time on escalation.
