Claim Delay
What to do when your health insurance claim is delayed
A delayed claim does not always mean a rejection. Here is a clear sequence of actions Indian policyholders can take.
When a health insurance claim stays pending, the first need is clarity: is the insurer waiting for documents, raising a query, or simply not responding?
1. Confirm the current status in writing
Ask the insurer or TPA for a written claim status. Note the claim number, admission dates, and the last document they acknowledge receiving.
2. Close open queries quickly
Many delays continue because a query reply is incomplete. Send hospital bills, discharge summary, investigation reports, and ID proofs in one labelled pack whenever possible.
3. Escalate inside the company first
If there is no meaningful update after reasonable follow-up, write to the insurer grievance officer with a short timeline of events and copies of earlier emails.
4. Prepare for external escalation
If the internal grievance path fails, you may need Insurance Ombudsman or further escalation routes. Keep every acknowledgement ready before you file.
